What is Botox?

Botox®-More than a Wrinkle Remover

Botox is a type of long-lasting muscle relaxer. A series of small injections prevent facial muscles from fully contracting. Botox treatments are most well known as a way to restore youth to your smile by removing wrinkles around your eyes and mouth. It can also be an excellent tool for cosmetic dentists for patients with high lip lines. For these patients, the Botox therapy helps relax the upper lip, allowing it to hide the upper gums and provide a more natural looking smile.

Dr. Blank first received specialized training in using Botox as a therapeutic solution to treat difficult dental problems such as TMJ pain, facial pain, headaches, migraines, and teeth grinding and clenching. For many patients, Botox provides a minimally invasive and fast acting solution for symptoms that might otherwise require extensive treatment or even surgery.

Is Botox safe?

Botox was introduced in the late 1980’s and since then more than 11 million men and women have been treated with Botox, giving it a strong history of safety. As with any drug, side effects are possible, and your doctor will discuss these with you before the procedure.

How much Botox will I need?

The amount of Botox that you may depends on a variety of factors, such as your primary concern, your individual musculature, and the depth of your current lines of expression (ie wrinkles). The chart to the right can give you a good estimate of what your customized treatment may include.

How long will Botox last?

Botox typically lasts 3-4 months. Several factors can affect this number to make it shorter or longer. Your doctor will do a lifestyle assessment to help you get the most duration from your treatment.

It usually takes between four and seven days to notice results from Botox, with full results at 14 days.

What are dermal fillers?

Dermal Fillers for an Enhanced Smile

Dermal Fillers (such as Juvederm®, Restylane® or Radiesse®) are used to restore volume to the area around the mouth. Dermal Fillers give lips fullness, erase the downward frown lines at the corners of the mouth, as well as wrinkles/creases in cheek areas. In addition to restoring a more youthful appearance to your smile, dermal fillers are useful in treating high lip lines and uneven lips.

How much dermal filler will I need?

The amount of dermal filler needed depends on several different factors, mostly being the extent of volume loss in the area to be treated. Each person is also different depending on their specific wants and desires. Unlike Botox, however, dermal filler is measured by the syringe, not the unit. One syringe of dermal filler may be enough to fill mild to moderate smile lines, where two or more syringes may be necessary to treat deeper skin folds.

Dermal fillers can last up to 12 months.
